Women Underway in HHSA

WU Brunch Sunday Jan. 15th-update
Author Last Post
Thanks, Paula, for the vote of confidence for Michele Nixon, Dependable Marine. Dale Whitley echoed your thoughts as well.

We had a lively group of 11 women at today's brunch, all engaging in multiple conversations, practicing knot-tying (thanks to Susan and her practice lines) and presenting ideas for the coming season.  Of great interest are a diesel engine class, on-the-water days to practice "man overboard" drills and sail trim in action and connecting with other women's sailing groups in the Annapolis area and specificallly marketing the Women's Regatta to the Annapolis and Eastport Yacht Clubs, as well as through our efforts with CBYRA and Spinsheet.

I wanted to pass along the below information that Larry Brown, Vice Commodore, posted to the Board about classes/seminars that Herrington Harbour North/Marinas will or would like to run, which match some of our interests. Watch the "Harbour Watch" electronic newsletter to slip holders for more information and check the HH Marina calendar if you are not a slip holder, as I'm sure they'd accommodate anyone associated with the HHSA.

HHN will sponsor “captain” classes. One will be on Mar 18, and will last about 6 hours. They will also sponsor longer (several day long) ABYC captain courses which will take place in the spring during the week.

HHN plans to sponsor a four phase courses for maintenance (fuel systems, electrical, composite, and systems) targeting mechanics. They would like to have a one day session for boat owners on a weekend.

HHN plans other sessions like photography and environment. They have a National Geographic contact that could do a naturalist program interesting to children (crocodile races??). They also plan to ask Stephen Brown, HHSA slip holder, author of the book “Tidewater: The Chesapeake Bay in Photographs.” The marina gave out copies of his book previously. That photography session would be at HHS.

See you next month, Feb. 12th, at The Public House!  Registration is now open.

Hi Bev,
Greetings from BVI. I just wanted to second the comment from Nancy. I think Michelle from Dependable is very good and would be a good choice. Wish I could attend!!!
Paula
Thanks, Linda and Nancy!  Wendy was, in fact, one of our guest speakers last winter and I was thinking of Michele from Dependable.

Bev

Hi Bev,
Michele Nixon (the wife of Rob) at Dependable Marine did our winterization and oil change this past season. I'm not sure if she is ABYC certified but she certainly knows what she is doing. Her number is 443-450-4886.

Bev,

You might talk with Wendy Kravit about diesel engine knowledge. I believe  she does her own engine maintenance and seems to have a good understanding of diesel mechanics. She also crossed the Atlantic this summer on her IP 420.

Although the weather forecast for this weekend is sleet and freezing rain, I'm not cancelling the brunch.  The last time I cancelled due to weather because I couldn't make it, at least three of you did make it and had a great time!  So, make the safest decision for yourself. If you've never been to the Public House, there is metered parking on the street and garage parking across the street. We meet in the back room to the far right of the entrance door.

We don't have a specific discussion topic but usually we discuss things we'd like to do in the coming year.  For example, Margaret Stewart suggested finding a woman diesel mechanic who can teach us a class using an actual engine. She heard of one woman mechanic down in Solomon's Island but maybe someone knows someone here.  I know that the owners of Dependable Marine are a husband-wife couple, although I don't know if she has the engine knowledge.  I know she has the electronics knowledge.  Has anyone been to any of the Women's Sailing conferences in California or Rhode Island?  Margaret says that there's never been anything like that in our area - obviously a big undertaking but possibly something we can do with other women's sailing groups in our area.  Food for thought!!

Thanks!
Bev
