The goal for race duration is about one hour for the first boat in each class to finish.  Much shorter races are hardly worth it for most crew who often drive more than an hour each way to race.  With on-time starts, the leaders will finish around 7:45 and almost everyone else by 8:30 pm.  The switch last season to twenty minute earlier starting times has helped get the fleet in earlier, and has not appeared to adversely affected many crew.

There will always be some nights where the combination of weather/traffic/course selection causes races to extend longer than desired, or to be lost due to time limits.  Fortunately, that only occurs a few times a season.

Doug, I understand your concern with a PHRF of 234 you, and Put-in-Bay (228), are significantly slower than the other boats.  RCs should keep that in mind when making course selections.

Ted,

Fully understand, a minimum 1 hr race for all seem very fair. I don't mind sailing longer, it beats being at work!

Cheers

Ted,

Thanks for RC! My outboard has a slight issue. I need to use some choke to keep some rpms up. I have taken the carb apart and cleaned it. So, I think it is something else, or I missed a jet. It still seems like a fuel issue. Anyway, I have been sailing and or motor sailing back from the finish when there is only a potential kt or so difference.

Finishing at the back at A makes for a bit of trek back to Town Point Marina, and then add a 10 min drive around (not so bad). 1 crew is out for the summer, he picked up a gig as water taxi in NAP Town. Two other crew are hit or miss. So, not a lot of crew for the post race events.

A race ~1 hr is the key to getting to dock bar in a timely manner. Falling off winds makes the 1 hr tough when you are a 234 PHRF. Shortening the starting leg would help, especially if there is a delay in the start or light winds at the start.

Thanks for the offer, but not necessary. Being the default RC is simply part of the job of the Racing Rear Commodore.

Agreed, Amara is planning on racing and supporting Skipper’s tonight, may the Zephyrs cooperate!

Yes, Zalek is the RC tonight. Hoping the storms come early and are gone by race time. Also hope the wind doesn’t fall out as quickly after the storms as it did two weeks ago.

The RC will try to get the racers back in enough time to get to Skipper’s Pier. Skipper’s keeps the outside bar and their kitchen open an extra hour (9 to 10 pm) on Wednesdays just for us. I’ve noticed our attendance seems to be dropping; often only skippers/owners and no crew, and fewer boats. It may simply reflect the fact that so far this season our race attendance has been less than recent years. We don’t have any permanent facilities to gather after races, so it is a very generous offer by Dave at Skipper’s to accommodate us on Wednesdays. But it also is a business decision on his part.
