dolphin sighting
Author Last Post

On Thursday, sailing off Shady Side enroute to Annapolis for the Boomerng, we saw a few playing in the bow wave.  It was amazing and joyful to see them this far north.  We also some rays or skates breaking the surface – pretty cool stuff – and then the rain came.  Aaaackkk what a lot of rain!

On Friday afternoon (7/7) about 3:30 PM we spotted a pod of dolphins in the Bay, just off the mouth of the West River.  In nearly 40 years of sailing the Chesapeake, this is the first time I have encountered dolphins this far north.

Shelly and I are on AKVAVIT right now, southbound from the West, near Shadyside.  The pod is paralleling us to the west at about 500 meters.

Returning from the Boomerang Race Sunday morning, I saw maybe a group of 20 dolphins right at Thomas point at around 10:00 AM.  I saw what was probably the same pod several hours later as I was approaching Herring Bay not far from Shadyside.

At one point I saw 4 dolphins jump together side by side.  Really amazing and surprising.  I usually see one or two dolphins near Herring Bay every 5 years or so. Never saw this many.  I thought I was just sleep deprived.

David,

I forgot to mention we saw some as well on the way back.

The only time I saw more was heading to Oxford a few years ago, at least 20 swimming in our wake.

A few last year also in mid bay, not so many though.

We were out for a day sail yesterday and on returning to HHS we saw about a dozen or so dolphins frolicking in the Herring Bay area about a mile out from the marina. Amazing and beautiful.
