St. Mary's Governor's Cup

What an epic adventure on Red Sky. Our phone tracker did not work right on RaceQ or the regatta tool. I have not downloaded the data file off my Garmin yet.

We sailed mostly beating across the bay from the start until about 1:30 am. We found that Red Sky with her 21' water line preferred the larger rollers in the middle of the bay, so we worked shore to shore. We could not tell much difference in speed on any part of the beat, so we went with less tacks and easier rollers.

Pre-race we found that sailing with our #2 and the main reefed was doing well for us. Around 2 AM we shook out the reef, as the wind shifted and we were able to make a run to Point No Point and Point Lookout on Starboard Tack. As we passed Point No Point, we swapped in the #1. As we rounded Point Lookout, we needed to reef the main.

When we got to St. Mary's R/G, we went back to the #2 and shook out the main. Then as we got to G3 we had to swap in the #1 again to make to the finish.

I was on the tiller all but 3 nm when I went below at 2:15 am for rest.

My #1 Steve had the headsail tacks and sail changes down well. He did well handling the wave action. We got wet and it was good to have foul weather gear.

On the return trip at Point No Point the lower pintle on the rudder broke. So we had remove the rudder and control steerage via the outboard.

I had hoped to have enough fuel onboard for a mix of sailing, motor sailing, and motoring, but that problem left us with the motor or motor sailing.

My fuel calculation was going to be close. Not to risk it, we pulled into Flag Harbour and a nice couple ran me up to a gas station so I could refill my spare can.

We made the trip without going to the newly refilled can.

An epic 1st Gov Cup and my longest race ever.

We took 3rd in CHESSS, but could have taken 3rd in PHRF C or N. WOW! That's motivating.

?Endless Journey was slogging our her down the bay? when our batteries died. Systems started going down and all would go dark when we tried to transmit on the VHF. Had enough battery to keep out nav lights and AIS up as we crossed over to the western bay and ducked into the pax river to wait for boat us. Got a jump and motored back to HHS. We tried to contact the RC on our handheld to advise them but never got a response.

Again HHSA was well represented in the 68 nmi overnight race from Annapolis to St. Mary's City on August 4-5.  A total of twelve entries across various PHRF Classes and CHESSS.

Weather-wise it was mostly (entirely?) a beat into strong southerly winds and steep waves; a gear and crew busting night.  Many boats chose to either not start or to retire during the race with no shame to either decision.  I'm sure the participants will have stories to tell. Congratulations and kudos to all HHSA participants!

Preliminary HHSA results are as follows:

PHRF A0:
2 - Laurent Givry's Farr 400 Jeroboam
3 - Erik Wulff's Melges 32 Endorphin

PHRF A2:
1 - Joe Laun's J-110 Lady Grey --- Congratulations on your win !!!
3 - David McCullough's J-33 Delirium
7 - Lynn McClaskey's J-110 Cimarron

PHRF - B:
5 - Stephen Howard's Pearson 37 Endeavor
RET - Mark Burrows' Beneteau 35s5 Cantata

PHRF - C:
RET - Bill Boggs' Catalina 36 Palmetto Moon

PHRF - N:
RET? - Sal Ambrosino's Catalina 42 Endless Journey

CHESSS:
3 - Doug Ellmore's C&C 24 Red Sky
RET - Robert Mills' Mini Translant Deye Mon
DNS - Rich Griner's C&C 115 Coyote
