Ahoy Skippers and Crews!

Here are the HHSA racing seminars for this season.  Last year we emphasized sail trim and crew techniques.  This year the emphasis is on Rules, Starting, and Tactics.  I encourage skippers and their crews to participate.  A big plus for the Race Management seminar is the great HHSA pancake breakfast at the Gedunk immediately prior!

Sunday February 25:  HHSA - Introduction to Racing - Getting to the first mark.  HHSA presenters Prag Katta and Ted Slotwinski.  LOFT 10 am - noon.

The Herrington Harbour Sailing Association (HHSA) conducts weekly Wednesday Night Racing in Herring Bay, monthly longer weekend races, and special races such as HHSA’a Women’s Regatta, and a race from Herring Bay to West River.  The racing includes spinnaker and non-spinnaker classes, and a separate non-spinnaker class for traditional cruising boats.

Come and meet current HHSA racers to learn about our racing program now in its 38th season.  What types of boats race?  What courses are used?  Who will you race against?  When does HHSA race?  This seminar is for new (to HHSA) and novice racers interested in learning to race.  It covers race preparations, the starting sequence, basic starting techniques, basic racing rules, and sailing the first leg.

Sunday March 4:  HHSA - Starting Techniques and Racing Rules.  Presented by Kristen Berry of Gale Force Sailing.  LOFT 10 am - noon.

This seminar will cover starting techniques and racing rules focused on HHSA Herring Bay PHRF racing which typically involves about ten boats in a start with significant differences in boat size, speed, and PHRF ratings.  What should your starting technique and objectives be if you are the slowest rated boat? An average boat? The fastest rated boat?  How should you modify your starting technique for an unsquare line?  If the first leg was mostly port tack or starboard tack? For a downwind start?

Saturday April 7:  HHSA - Tactics focused on PHRF racing:  HHSA presenter Prag Katta.  LOFT 10 am - noon.

This seminar will cover overall strategy and the factors which determine strategy progressing to discussion of when and how to apply tactics to achieve your strategy.  Beginning with pre-race considerations, then pre-start and starting considerations including tactics, considerations for the first leg (upwind or downwind) and the approach to the first mark including tactics.  Focus will be on HHSA racing which typically involves classes with significant differences in boat size, speed, and PHRF ratings.

Saturday April 21:  HHSA - Race Management  HHSA presenter Ted Slotwinski.  LOFT 11 am - 1 pm.

This is the Herrington Harbour Sailing Association (HHSA)’s annual race management training.  HHSA does not have a permanent Race Committee to conduct its racing, but relies on each HHSA skipper and crew volunteering at least once per season to serve as the Race Committee.  Good race committee performance is essential to achieve fair, fun, competitive racing!  All HHSA skippers and their crews are strongly encouraged to attend this seminar.  Note there are several significant changes to the starting sequence for 2018 that race committees and racers will need to know.
