Women Underway in HHSA

JULY Women Underway Meeting
Author Last Post
Lavonne, Emily and I had a very lovely Women Underway meeting on the Gedunk patio yesterday evening. The temperature was moderate and at times so breezy that our plates and napkins blew away!

Lavonne talked about her experience with her husband bringing their Catalina Morgan 440 up from Florida with a woman captain and encountering a storm which forced them to divert their route to Charleston. Lavonne is one of several Women Underway members who would like to gain more confidence handling her own boat in tight quarters and strong conditions. Aside from practicing on their own, we talked about how July, August, and September are good months to practice as a group to help each other because there is more light in the evening when it is generally quieter on the water.

Emily recounted the "woman overboard" incident on Jubilee two weeks ago during the attempted race in high winds and rolling 4-5 ft waves and how everyone did their job to contain the sails, throw a flotation device, keep an eye on the woman overboard, maneuver the boat into position, and use all available tools, including a line and possibly a leg while standing on the swim ladder, to get her aboard. Although this was not used on Jubilee, Emily brought a foam "noodle" to demonstrate how handy it would be to extend to someone in the water for them to grab.

I talked about my research into "orange" sunscreen stains on my boat. These stains come from the Avobenzone in ALL spray sunscreen products (except Garden Goddess Zinc Spray, available at CVS)  and lotions and cremes with Avobenzone. Non-Avobenzone products are usually labeled "mineral sunscreen" (for zinc and titanium oxide) or for kids or "sensitive skin" (check the ingredients, they are often identical in different packaging for marketing purposes!) because they don't have chemicals, just the minerals. However, they are often thick and don't absorb well. However, I found some products at CVS (name brands as well as CVS brand) that went on nicely - see attached PDF.  Beware of products that tout "no oxybenzone" because they may STILL have Avobenzone.  Using non-Avobenzone products will not only save your boat but your clothes.

Unfortunately, Deb W and I will not be able to attend tomorrow. Eunice
I hope that what I have fits. Can she come with you to try them on? If not, you can take them with you for her to try on. I have another purse for you, LOL!

Bev,

My daughter Katie just started working as crew for the Woodwinds (I'm sure you're familiar with the two 74 foot schooners out of Annapolis which take tourists out) and she is in need of good foulies. She's using a ten year old set of hand-me-downs that haven't recently been tested in a storm.....

I have a few sets in different sizes. Sharing is always a great thing. I will not be at Women Underway this Thursday. I have other plans made several weeks ago.

Ed and I are still in Crisfield. There are reports of 20+ winds and rough seas. We plan to head back tomorrow. With our luck there will be no wind!😏

I plan to bring three pairs of high quality foul weather pants, size Medium, that don't fit anymore and I'd like to gift them to anyone who can use them.

Emily, absolutely a topic that needs to be discussed esp because you were there. Thanks!

If we need something to talk about next Thursday.....The racing fleet experienced some challenging conditions on our last Wednesday race, and in fact Jubilee had a Woman Over Board during the starting sequence. We could discuss general safety issues in heavy wind and seas and share WOB/MOB experiences and lessons learned. Just sayin'....

The next meeting is Thursday, July 12, at 6:30 pm. We will meet at the Gedunk. Bring your favorite beverage and a snack to share.

In June, we had 6 attendees and there was no specific topic. It was a nice change, but we also want to make sure we are meeting the needs of the group. If anyone has a topic they'd like to discuss - Vacation plans? Upcoming cruises? Boat maintenance question? - bring it on!
