Double Handed Results
Author Last Post
Hi Doug,

Just wanted to thank you and your crew of one, truly a double handed including the captain, for a most enjoyable day on the bay.  Good choice of course with it a long enough  weekend race to justify the drive out from Vienna.  The 2 hours was just about right.  Had a bit of everything - up and down wind with some reaching thrown in plus a strong current.  Good thing was not experiencing debris who someone encountered as heard on the radio.  Plus the storms came much later.  Also good anticipation for the dying wind potential and shortening of course.  Quite obvious as to where the finish line was after rounding 81A and getting eyes out of the boat for HB1.

Thanks again for my 2018 debut.

Rich, SV Spook

Ted,

You are correct of course, but since the RCs intention was clear and the finish line clearly visible, we had no issue with the situation.

It did add a level of complexity for spin boats, since a Genoa set and spinnaker take down was required ... Emily and I enjoyed that challenge and executed flawlessly.

Good times!  Great to be on the water.

Keith

A note for future Race Committees.  There is no provision in the HHSA Racing Rules to shorten a course to an intermediate position between marks.  The course may be shortened to any mark on the posted course provided no boat has rounded the mark.  Rule 11 addresses this.  Rule 12 modifies RRS 33 such that changing the next leg only applies to HHSA windward/leeward courses using drop marks.

Had any boat protested Sunday’s finish line, a protest committee likely would have thrown the race out.

Thanks much Red Sky for RC'ing. Another really great day on the bay.

Looks like Aurora was the only one on RaceQ's today ... but in case anyone is interested, here's the link:

Thanks Doug for being RC. It was a lovely day to be on the Bay, less humidity, no storms, a little more wind would have been nice but acceptable. HHSA has an “S” flag for shortening course, but no “C” flag.

Ahoy,

Attached are the draft Results from today's double handed race.

The fleet sailed course A Long in light winds, estimated from the NNE at variable 4-8 kts.

RC set-up south west of HHSA A squared to HHSA B with the prevailing wind. The starting gun went off at 11:00 local time. All clear was given after the gun. The tide was going out at the start and seemed to have an impact as boats worked up towards HHSA B and then north to 83A.

RC monitored the fleet as they sailed towards HHSA B, then headed toward G1. RC setup a finish line near G1 and monitored the fleet and gave notice of shorten course. Given the conditions and progress of the fleet, RC decided to shortened the course further after watching wind conditions and progress of the fleet.

Post race, RC may have been keep the finish closer to G1, but given the wind conditions, RC was worried the first Non-Spin boats in class would not be able to make the 3 hr finish time.

Therefore, finish was moved again for the fleet after they turn 81A towards Herring Bay G1. The line was setup prior to the first boat turning at 81A. The fleet was notified by radio. As a result, all boats finished within 3 hr elapsed time goal, just NW of 81A.

There was not a C flag in the RC bag for a shorten course, so RC flew one her C flags. Recommendation that the RC bag include a C flag.

For anyone who wants to put the data in RaceQs and for the record, the following are the positions for the start and finish lines.

Start Pin: N38 deg 44.683' / W76 deg 32.199'
Start RC: N38 deg 44.623' / W76 deg 32.094'
Finish Pin: N38 deg 43.730' / W76 deg 30.214'
Finish RC: N38 deg 43.741' / W76 deg 30.166'

Congrats to those who got the gun:

Jubilee - 1st Spinnaker (1:28:38 elapsed / 1:17:37 corrected)
Spook - Non-Spin Cruiser (1:58:30 elapsed / 1:30:46 corrected) and fastest overall non-spin.
Liberty Prevails - 1st Non-Spin Racer (2:01:52 elapsed / 1:38:06 corrected)

Congrats to all! Everyone finished under 3 hrs.

Cheers!
