Series 3 Race 2 Results

Greetings from Singapore sorry if this is duplicate, having connectivity issues here this week and just catching up on emails, I trust Toms judgment as I have learned a lot from him in the last few years and Hanks conclusions of observations and final  results whatever they may be. My crew was more impressed with Toms excellent maneuver at the start to force me around than my ability to finally catch up on the last leg, partially due to our putting some money in the bank holding off on tacking to the pin layline that more favored than it first appeared with trapezoidal ladder lines (thanks Matt!). Speaking of which, I support comments of Matt and Snak Time crew excellent RC, especially first time. For those of us fortunate enough to have sailed with him and crew, you may agree on my nick name “Gourmet-Time” as those race meals are winners, no matter how anyone places!  I look forward to racing again in a few weeks when back in the US crew is in at least five other countries this summer, my son just left for Brussels.

Hank,

Thanks for the correction and the corroboration.  Having given Gaia a 60 second head start last time with that 4 minute “all clear” start, I was not feeling overly charitable with last night’s results.  I know it’s not the America’s Cup, but to have two first-place wins in a row clipped by RC misstep was too much to bear.  See you all on Sunday for the double handed race.

I greatly enlarged the photo of the sign-in sheet again, having done the same last night.  It could very well be a rapidly written 9 instead of a 5.  I'm OK with re-doing the NSC scoring since it would more closely conform to the fleet's actual experience.  Will post revision shortly.

Cheers,

Hank

Yes, yes! I confirm. I could not figure howGaia could have beaten us by five minutes when we thought we had a shot at beating them only a few minutes before the finish. Also “confirm” the comments about the RC. Baptism by fire and a job well done! -Joe

Matt and Michel,

I think in the dark RC misjudged the timing of finish. Gaia and Spirit crossed the line almost simultaneously shortly followed by Second Wind. I am sure Les and Joe will confirm the timing. I realize in the darkness it was difficult to judge whether Gaia or Spirit crossed the line first, but either way, we were mere seconds apart. Please confirm and revise the results.

Matt, I think your first effort at RC was stellar and I appreciate the judgment exercised in starting the race. It was a fun and exciting night on the water.

All the best,

Tom, Spirit

Ahh...I see the problem. The sheet says Gaia's time is 8:39:10, but Hank's results say 8:35:10. The boats were very close. I think that makes them 22 seconds apart. Hank...please make that change.

I can see how that is unclear. I was planning on bringing them home and submitting digitally to ensure there are no handwriting errors, but was instructed to take a picture and text it to Hank after the race, so I did. The original is in the metal clipboard in the locker at South.

I might suggest as a process texting the results for Hank to publish as "preliminary" and follow up the next day with a confirmed digital copy? It was very late when we got back and didn't look closely to see if any numbers looked like they could be misinterpreted.

Thanks Joe...we had a great time!

Thanks everyone for your patience last night. Once we got out there, I thought the winds were going to pick up as the evening went on. Silly me thinking a forecast would be accurate!

Also, I believe we were wrong with some of the guns as we had the new boat Little Lion listed as a cruiser instead of a racer. Sorry about that! Gaia should have had the gun for non-spin cruiser, Little Lion for non-spin racer, and Jubilee for spinnaker.

We blew a coolant hose while motoring to setup the finish line. It was an old coolant hose that I had earmarked for replacement but hadn't gotten around to it yet. A reminder not to ignore engine maintenance! We had just enough momentum to get close enough to where we wanted to be. I was able to fix the issue and get it running again before everyone crossed the line. Overall a great experience as Race Committee for the first time!

See you next week!

HHSA Racers,

After waiting out the storms, we got a light air race in.  Congratulations to a former HHSA racer who is back with us with a new boat, Little Lion, for his first win.  Enclosed are the results.

Cheers,
Hank
