Ah ha, yes, I think I got it now. Thanks Hank and Keith!

I made the mistake on wednesday of trying be too close to the pin ... I think, next time, I'll try to time it so I start as close behind the rabbit boat as possible, a bit further from the pin.

Appendix B in the HHSA Sailing instructions helped as well.

Thanks,
Dave

Don’t forget that even though a boat is starting later than the guy at the pin she’s further down the course if starting right behind the rabbit. For example, if the rabbit is 100 yds away from the pin when you cross behind you’re 70 yds further down the course. Look at a wind ladder drawing of the start.

The Rabbit starts the race, by trying to be at the pin at the end of the 5 minute sequence, and then after passing the pin goes close hauled.

Please try to imagine two boats in a situation where the rabbit runs along a line perpendicular to the wind: -

- One starts at the pin end of the line going close hauled
- The other starts a minute later waiting for the Rabbit to go by, before going close hauled

Which one is ahead? If you don't see that the boat at the pin end has a one minute head start, then I am sorry, I don't know what else to tell you. And by the way, the Rabbit is also way behind, and not going toward the upwind mark. The Rabbit should not be penalized by being forced to start behind other boats.

On the other hand, if the Rabbit is close hauled and all boats time their start to be as close as possible to the Rabbit then everyone is working their way up the course at the starting signal, thus making it a much fairer start, and hopefully making it more like a normal start.

Speed, time, and distance calculations - always the big challenge for racing sailors.

Hopefully this helps.

Thanks,
Keith

Thanks Keith, that was my first time in a Rabbit start. Interesting stuff.

Just curious - when acting as the Rabbit, is the goal to time it so that you reach the pin exactly at the start (at end of 5 min countdown)? Or should you aim to time it so you pass the pin slightly earlier than the start, say, 30 seconds before, sail the line on beam reach for a short while, and then head up to close hauled on port tack at the end of the 5 min countdown?

For those who have not been in a Rabbit Start before, please note that the Rabbit goes hard on the wind after passing the pin. If the Rabbit were to run a line perpendicular to the wind (i.e. normal starting line) then:
1) The Rabbit would be way behind the closing hauled boats that start close to the pin, going away from the first mark
2) The boats starting down the line would also be way behind the close hauled boats that start close to the pin

The goal is for everyone to be hard on the wind at the start...that is the only way for a Rabbit Start to be fair. Let me know if you have any questions about this.

Thanks,
Keith
