9/16/2020 - Fun fall racing practice #2
Author Last Post
Results Attached. It includes Week 1 and 2.

Bay Retriever Finish Time is in Red to highlight it was observed as being a bit far from the finish pin.

Keith Mayes get's credit for calling the short course for SPIN, too. The wind fell off as we got closer to the haze of a sunset. That haze was due to the ash from west coast fires. But we had nice wind for for start, 10+ kt.

All started from HHSA B.

We picked course J for non-spin to give them more of a starboard beam reach vs. downwind leg. Then port tack to HHSA A. I hope it worked out for them well.

Spin had course H, shorter but resulted in some tacking after returning to HHSA B. I would have liked course J, too. We had to jibe the spinnaker pole to reach B, but good practice for our crew.

Hope to see ya next week. Bay Retriever is the rabbit scheduled for 9/23.

Cheers,

Doug

Some of the things I am reflecting on:

1) It was not a race but practice.  Let's take it a bit easy.

2) If someone is really worried about a 100' long finish line, maybe someone from HHS could go to the locker and get the inflatable, then drop it on the way out 100' North of HHSA A. That is if we are all really worried about finishing distance from HHSA A.  It could be a finish gate.  Maybe we could add that to the SI's and other HHSA racing docs?

3) We need to respect the rabbit and not be so close and be more cautious.  A boat passing the rabbit and healed over on opposite tacks is potentially dangerous and will create potential liability issues if there is damage as a result. Maybe that needs to be in the SIs and HHSA docs. Document who is clearly liable if you participate. The rabbit has the right of way.

4) The rabbit had to pinch up dead to wind and fall off on the line because vessels were so close or crossing their bow.  Some of the rabbit's crew were stressed with the start. Other rabbit crew were very stressed with possible collision.

5) Keep it fun, before, during, and after the finish of practice.

Thanks,

Doug
I am still waiting for 3 times, then I will post summary. I emailed the skippers.

Thanks

Doug
My crew and I really enjoy the opportunity to be just be "messing around in boats," trying new things, breaking in new crew, and continuing the process of learning from mistakes.

Since Revolution is the scheduled rabbit starter we will try to:

- Announce the course prior to the warning signal on VHF 68 multiple times, no checking is required and none taken, but will will wave hello

- Sound a Warning Signal at 6:00 PM

- Pass the pin close to 6:05 PM local time on Port Tack Close Hauled with a Starting Signal as we pass (a personal challenge for us)

- When all boats have passed our stern, we have determined we have passed the bows of all boats starting, or 90 seconds has lapsed since passing the starting mark, we will sound a blast and tack to starboard.

If your out there messing around with us, please remember:

- Let Revolution as the starting rabbit cross your bow on port tack after the start, even if your on Starboard tack

- Sail your vessel across the start line on starboard tack

- Pass the finish mark HHSA A on your Port side

- Record your time of day finish on the google worksheet at:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Wb-ipc3g_cTN8zaXhAXHEIGK4r-JTnYfiIa3-cCE1wo/edit#gid=0

or email your time of day finish at revolution4515@gmail.com

If you don't have an official PHRF rating and you want to give it a whirl, email me at revolution4515@gmail.com and we can work one out for practice.

Weather models suggest the breeze may be from the SE, so we might be able to start at B or C. But who knows with all these crazy tropical storms around the Atlantic and Gulf.

Cheers,

Doug
