Series 2 Race 1 Cancelled for All Classes
Author Last Post
All--

I wasn't there, but still not quite sure what the discussion is about.  The RC made it clear (via this message) that the race was abandoned for all classes, which is the prerogative and sole discretion of the RC and is without time limit.  Our rules on abandonment are a direct quote of the RRS; HHSA's "RC not on station" rules/guidelines pertain specifically to situations when the RC is unable to remain on station but presume the race has NOT been abandoned.

Cheers,
Jason

I have a timer on my B&G Vulcan Chart plotter. In race mode all I have to do is touch "STOP" to record the time.

It has a countdown clock for starts that rolls over to a timer. It's a nice feature. I have marks programmed so I see lines between marks and headings, including AIS data.

I also use a Garmin handheld to record data and as way point backups.

Jubilee did not report a time.  We had a rough idea when we finished but it was rough.  We had our hands full with a 30 MPH gust as we approached HHSA A, and frankly we did not see it until it was 50 yards away.  Everyone else had the luxury of following us home.  Delirium was behind us and we don't know exactly how long after us they finished

I submit that in those conditions no one standing at the helm can accurately record their finish time passing 50 yards away - maybe within a couple of seconds.  I further submit that unless everyone's watches were synchronized with the RC, then accuracy was impossible.  How many times have you crossed the line and sworn that the RC was 5 seconds late with the horn or gun - every week!

If you honestly believe that last night was a fair race and everyone accurately recorded their times then go ahead and score us DNF.

Keith

Valid question from Kent.

My questions:

Which Spinnaker boat(s) didn't take their time?

Did they not take their time because they had not yet finished and heard (like I did) the RC on the radio: This race is abandoned (no class specified so I assumed it was everyone)

From a Commodore Cup's standpoint is it fair to cancel two classes and let one stand? The book says:

16. Abandonment
A. Race abandonment for reasons other than exceeding time limits is at the sole discretion of the Race Committee. If the Race Committee determines it cannot remain on station or otherwise continue its duties, the race may be abandoned; however, after one boat has sailed the course and finished, the Race Committee shall not abandon the race without considering the consequences for all boats in the race or series. See HHSA Rule 11.C for finishing when the Race Committee is not on station.

While it doesn’t surprise me that last night’s race was canceled, I would like to point out a few items. One, the spinnaker boats had finished prior to the announcement that the race had been abandoned. Two, rule 11.c (HHSA rules), states that if the committee boat is not on station then it is the responsibility of the boat to record their finish time. Three, rule 12.b, if a boat fails to report it’s time then it will be recorded DNF. Am I missing something?

HHSA Racers,

The subject says it all.  We could not determine the finish times for all the boats in spinnaker class in last night's race.  That has forced the abandonment of that class together with both non-spinnaker class boats.  All skippers please make sure you record your boat's finish time after a race when there is no race committee boat present..... it's in the rules.

Cheers,
Hank
