Jim,

I know,,, it is an uphill battle, but the Catalina 445 owners just divorced ourselves from the joint group. We are going to make our own class rules now and will give directives to PHRF on base ratings... Cal 40s did the same thing successfully...

Good luck
Fought that fight one too many times with Avalon
Deaf ears are the rule in PHRF
Been close to quitting myself
Been penalize twice for the same thing two different years
Cost me -6 seconds each for each trip got +3 seconds on each appeal. Amazing group to deal with.

Thanks for noting. JT and I went through this last year and although he went to bat for me. Others went to "protect the fleet mode" and then they dropped me 10 points to a one forty one (oops, that might be classified). Don't quote me on that!

I have a phone call scheduled with teh chair as the FB posts are watching teh PHRF bleed. Is there anyway that we can start doing some testing to ORC as we score? What will it take? just a formula on a spread sheet. As a club, I think that we owe ourselves to at least check it out. But if they score me as a 141, I will not race PHRF or give them any money. The concept of protecting the fleet went out with swing keels. We can all see the PHRF is dying all across the country,,,lets get on teh life boat before we go down with the ship.

John,

I have not had much luck fighting PHRF either (remember they do officially take a "protect the fleet" stance, which means they will automatically default to a lower rating), but data always helps.  Remember too that PHRF has only been "adapted" to work with non-traditional racing boats... it works really well but only if there is a lot of data (and a lot of boats to compare against each other).  There is also the problem that PHRF will default to marketing material (sailboatdata.com, which pulls its data from the glossy brochures from manufactures for MOST boats) for measurements in the absence of actual measurements,   Contact Jahn Tehansky and ask about the process of appealing your rating.  Starting with a stack of all the results of races you were in and your ORC cert will help make your case.  You can also pay for a measurement (which includes a haul-out).

If you really want a lengthy homework assignment, US Sailing has the procedure for statistically dialing in your PHRF on their website, however in order to be mathematically valid you need to have raced roughly against the same boats for each race and in roughly the same conditions you use to do your analysis (and you need about 10 such races).

V/r,
Jason

Folks it is that time of year where I fight with the measures... I am about to give up. Using the races that I have participated in, mostly distance races on the Bay, then comparing the scores, Velocity should be rated at a minimum of 150 and a max of 160. The issue is that there is only one other boat racing as much in Florida and their rating is a 160.

Last year I presented all the information and the committee felt, in their infinite wisdom that since no other jenneau or beneteaus were rated in the 150s that my cert was only raised from a 136 to a 141. SO with no further objections, we will race with a 150 this year. Thank you for your understanding.

Ok - now that your done laughing... what more can I do? call me if you have ideas. NOte my ORC
