Racers

Many have signed up for RC duty on Wednesdays but we are short of volunteers for weekend races. The next one up is Bloody Point on May 15.

Who can/wants to do it?

Thanks

Michel

Still no volunteer for this coming Saturday. I am about to get on a plane and will not even be around. (For those who know him Sarita will race with Tim Richards this Wednesday and they plan on going to Skippers afterwards).

back to Bloody Point. If no one steps up, it will need to be a rabbit which would be a great pity!

Michel

Michel

Racers

Kent Kunze (Glissade) offers to the start of the Bloody Point race this weekend. however he cannot stay for the duration.

So by order of preference:

1) Someone volunteers to do RC for the whole race

2) Someone else comes to get the arrivals time ( a little tricky as you have to time it right) or

3) Folks need to take their own times on arrival at A according to 11.C of our Racing Rules:

If the Race Committee is not on station, a boat finishes when the foremost part of the hull crosses an imaginary line not over 100 feet away from the finish mark and 90 degrees from the lay line of the final leg of the course.

If that happens make sure the times you write down are to the second and on GPS time. Please email the times to Hank (it will be the middle of the night for me) at hgchalkley@gmail.com including the name of your boat, class you sailed and indicate if you were shorthanded. Copy me at jichgag@aol.com just in case.

Michel

Jason Fox

Good morning! We just had a change in schedule, so Fine Tuned can take RC for the whole race.

Michel

Thanks Jason

Michel

Firth of Tay will take RC duties for the summer regatta on June 6. I will be onboard to manage the event with Peter and others he is currently roping in.

Next up is Sharps Island Race on June 12. We need an RC for that beautiful twilight race.

We also need RCs for most of Series 2 and 3. Please look at the schedule and send me emails indicating the dates you will be taking on the task.

Thanks

Michel

Michel

We are looking for one or two VACCINATED volunteers to help Peter and I officiate during the summer regatta on Sunday June 6. Please reach out to me at jichgag@aol.com if you are interested.

Thanks

Michel

Michel

Kent Kunze of Glissade fame will help. We're all set for June 6.

Still looking for RC for the Sharps Island.

The following week Amara gives the start to the Leukemia Cup.

An busy month of June coming up, away from the noise of the cicadas

Rich24
I can also be available for the 6th and the Summer Regatta.

Rich Ordeman

Michel

Summer Regatta is in the books, thanks to all who assisted Firth of Tay for RC duty (by the way if you ever look for a classy and comfortable way to do RC duty, that's probably the best one after maybe the cat).

Next up is Sharps Island next Saturday. We still don't have an RC for that. It looks to be a nice cool evening, perfect for barbequing and swimming while the racers fight it out. Please sign up!

Michel

Michel

After a Women's Regatta for the books (Congratulations to the winners Happy Place and Chessie and all participants) it is back to HHSA business.

We have Salute for RC this Wednesday, but need volunteers for most of July and all of August. We definitely need RC for July 7 and July 21 as Spook is tentative for the 14th. For weekend races we need RC for the Double Handed Race on August 8 and the West River Race on August 21.

So if you have not done it yet please step up and send me the date you will be doing it. As always, available dates are visible on the Racing Calendar.

On a personal note, Amara will race this Wednesday but we will be gone after that until mid August, though I will continue to "officiate" on the Forum and Racing page.

Michel

Michel

All

We still do not have any RC for Race 5 of Series 3 nor for the Double Handed Race.

As a reminder, Less experienced RCs are always welcome to ask for help from more experienced racers. This includes picking a good course in light of the conditions and making sure the line is square to the wind. Don't be shy.

Also remember that a good line is better than a on time start. If you have a severe wind shift in the middle of the sequence, raise the AP flag (Cat in the Hat), ask for help in moving the line and start again).

I plan on being RC for the West River Race, August 24

We need a RC for this coming Wednesday. Who's turn is it? Who hasn't done it yet?

Thanks

I will be RC on Three Seas in place of Gaia. I thought this was already arranged?

Btw…plenty of room for 4-5 more if anyone wants to join.

Autumn Classic is this weekend. No one has volunteered for RC yet.

Who will be stepping up?

Michel

Kent
Glissade will be RC if I can get some crew. Anyone like to help? Send me a text 703 303-8591.

Two Frostbites are in the books. Sunday November 14 looks like a warm and pleasant day. We still need a volunteer for RC. So please step forward.

We also need an RC for the following Sunday November 21. After that we are all set.

Thanks in advance

I am about to leave town for the weekend, still no volunteer for this weekend's race. Weather looks nice and there are plenty of boats that participated in races 1 and 2 so hopefully one will do it. But please let us know now, so the other racers know what to expect.

Thanks

Matt, Thank you!! And it’s great that Mike may join you. (It’s also great to see Sun Rae out there figuring this sport out! Keep it up Mike!)

Lots of folks are missing the joy of RC. It is not just a thankless obligation. Granted that it can be stressful the first few times, but it can be a lot of fun once you have a few reps under your belt.

My tip to all RCs. EVERYONE on the boat should be keeping time together. Don’t put that task on one person. Everyone should know the sequence and the proper horn and be looking at a GPS clock and communicating with each other what’s about to happen. Then it’s a relatively easy and enjoyable task.

That’s my unsolicited 2 cents

One more RC volunteer needed next weekend and we can wrap up this great year.

All

Just saw this email kind of late. Please email him quickly if you have a spot.

Writer is at tjwright003@gmail.com

Good morning,

I am a sailor living in Alexandria, and I heard about your club from Mark Burrows, who occasionally sails I20s with us on the Potomac. I saw you have a couple of races coming up, including one tomorrow 11/4. Do you know of any boats that need extra crew?

A little about me: I'm male, 26, and work in DC as a naval architect. I grew up sailing keelboats on Lake Michigan (primarily on a Nelson Marek 36) and have been dinghy racing I20s on the Potomac since I moved here in late 2018. I'd say I have an intermediate level of experience, and I am competitive but not aggressive. With a little guidance I'd be happy to work any position.

Let me know what you think. I'm hoping we can work something out!

Best ,
Tristan Wright

Keith
Michel,

When I do RC for the penultimate Frostbite it will be the 4th time this year, and the following week will be Doug's 3rd time.

There are skippers doing Frostbites who at best have done RC just once. One of those needs to step up and do it next week.  Beda is one of those ... how about it?

Doug Ellmore, Sr.

Keith,

I concur. We did a weekend race which was a long evening event. Not stressful after the start.

I sent a note to Beda to see if he would do my Dec 5th. My normal crew who works with me to do RC is not available. I waiting to hear back.

I think Stella Maris and Oriana should step up.

Doug

s/v REVOLUTION

Keith
Doug,

Stella Maris is not only a new member, it is his first boat. He has not had the benefit of years of racing and has not attended RC Training.

Orianna has raced with us 3 times and is also new to racing and has no RC Seminars.

What on earth are you thinking Doug?  Let's be reasonable!

OK

The search for volunteers for RC is indeed one of the hardest things for the Race Commodore. I believe it should not be that way, but then again the world is not always the way I think it ought to be.

First a question. to whom should the credit for yesterday's RC go? would that be Sun Rae if Mike Sanio was onboard? Matt, I let you make that decision.

Next and following weeks: Of all the ones that have been racing frostbites, Stella Maris and Oriana didn't do RC this year yet (unless Sun Rae doesn't get the credit for yesterday). I believe that both are in their first year which gives them a pass, but note that the pass is a privilege, not an obligation. I believe that all the others (except for Fine Tuned who did it 3 times): Cantata, Uncloudy day, Blue Bayou, Happy Place, Kaya and Put in Bay have done it once and only once. I would definitely give Cantata a break considering all the work that goes into scoring.

So the way I see it, of all the boats I listed, I don't think one or another stands out as being a laggard. What I believe should happen is that three should step up. One this Sunday, one instead of Jubilee next week and one instead of Revolution the last week.

First things first, who is doing it next week?

Michel

Another note

Seasoned racers who have time can also get on other boats and teach the fine art of RC to newbies, so they learn it on their boat and understand how everything needs to be rigged. A second best is for newbies to be invited on a seasoned sailor's boat.

I would have gladly done it this year, but it is not at all advisable for me to do it while I have two screws coming out of my finger. They are coming off December 6 and I will be better than new next year.

Justin Hardeman

Apologies for not volunteering, confirming it was my first year and didn't fully understand how it works. I am out of town visiting family this weekend. I can potentially host next weekend or the weekend after if I can get assistance. This past weekend was going to tentatively be the last for the season and crew but I will try RC if I can get help.

Joseph Davis, Jr.

Hi All,

I don't know if this is helpful, but Oriana is willing to be the RC boat this coming weekend. I have a work obligation, but my brother Jon and I think one other would be available. As Keith noted, we have no RC training or experience, so would need an additional volunteer (or two) on board who knew what they were doing.

Joe Davis

s/v Oriana

Michel
Thank you so much Joe

If experts can help that would work but it still seems to me that the boats I listed and have been enjoying the frostbites should be able to step up and take care of this coming race.

Beda Brichacek

Due to Revolution unavailability for the last Frostbite race (Dec 5), Uncloudy Day will take over the RC duties. With our last disastrous RC assignment in mind, I would like to ask for patience and tolerance. Any advise is welcome, experienced supervisors are more than welcome to come aboard. The main problem – failure of the main timing device has been corrected and we will have 2 additional timing devices (synchronized :) ) on board. Since it is the last race of the year, we expect less boats and starting just one group also helps. It should be a good training for the next year.

Michel

We are doing real progress. This leaves 2 slots and as per my previous communication there are four, seasoned racing boats that can and should be able to figure it out between themselves: Blue Bayou, Happy Place, Kaya and Put in Bay

1) the most urgent is this Sunday, where no one has volunteered.

2) next Sunday Jubilee did sign up, but it would be the third time Jubilee does it this year and it isn't right since the others only did it once

Hopefully all this will get resolved today, it should not be down to the wire like last week.

Thank you Doug for the notes mash up and RC advice.

Michel

Keith
Michel,

Jubilee is happy to do RC on the 28th. No worries.

I had written earlier that this would be my 4th time ... I was PRO for the Womens Regatta with some of my crew, onboard Fine Tuned.

Thanks,
Keith

BTW, regarding the length of a starting line ... its a bit like trying to figure out how much hot sauce to put in the chilli. It depends!

Before the 1st Race last week the true wind was 3 - 5 knots and the line was good.  Before the start of the 2nd Race the true wind was 13 - 15 knots ... and the line was too short.

As I told Matt, I'm kicking myself for not moving the pin.

I am one of those who adds a pinch of this and a slurp of that and about mmmm, that much hot sauce to the chilli. Am I cooking for 4 or 8 or 11?  Kids or adults. It depends.

I have never used the method described in the RC Manual for setting a line. It does not take into account the wind strength, sea state, or experience level of the competitors. Just saying ...

Thanks a lot Hank, that's great.

And I fixed my misspelling of Blew Bayou.

Hank
I'd appreciate your advice on the starting line if it doesn't look right to
you after we set it up. There has been chatter on the Forum over the length
of the line and "guesstimates" become more difficult as the number of boats
starting increases [10-12] especially when accompanied by strong wind a
large waves. Regards Hank
