Series 1, Race 2 Results
MarkDB

Hi folks:

Interesting evening of racing but we got one in! The season is official now. Thanks again to VC Matt Smith and Chris Thunell for running the race for us. We do not have a boat signed up to RC for next Wednesday. Please Volunteer. I'm running out of favors.

On Sunday, I will be assigning boats to RC slots, that have not volunteered yet. To get the date you want, Sign Up Here.

I am pretty sure that we did not finish 20 minutes behind Amara!

We rounded the pin end very close behind Cantata after announcing our approach. Amara crossed shortly after us.

Year should be 2022.

RC wasn't Dave P/Aurora.

Scoresheet updated. Handwriting glitch on the scoresheet. Brainfart on the RC boat name. Feedback is a blessing.

Cheers,

Mark

Beating a dead horse maybe, but Series 1 Race 1 has a link to a file that represents Race 2. I think there should be no link to a Race 1 file if it was abandoned by RC.

Eunice - Liberty Pre

Please change year to 2022.

Mark,

Amara's results under short handed competition are different from their results under class NR. Amara is shown with an elapsed time of 2:10:22 under NR, but under the short handed competition they show an elapsed time of 1:50:22.

Alas, I note that only in the spinnaker class did the lead boat, Salute, finish within the 2 hour time qualification limit. For NS Cruising the lead boat, Laura T, missed the time limit by 4 min 7 sec; and for NS Racing the lead boat, Liberty Prevails, missed the time limit by 10 min 4 sec. Therefore, I believe the NSC and NSR classes should be scored as abandoned.

It was a nice evening on the Bay, but the course was too long for the conditions; both regarding time qualification limits and any desire to promote socializing at Skipper's Pier.

Ted

Eunice - Liberty Pre

I respectfully disagree with Ted.

Jason Fox
Sadly, Ted is correct: NS-R and NS-C should be scored abandoned per HHSA Racing Rules and WNR SIs.

Mark, since Spin class finished, this technically 'disturbs' an underlying math assumption behind the WNBOTY Award (that all classes race the same number of races).  May or may not make a difference in the end, but it's something the CC will need to consider towards the end of the season..

From the WNR SIs:

Time Qualifications

-In order for the race to qualify, the lead boat in each class must finish within 2 hours after the starting signal, and each boat must finish before 2135 or be scored as DNF. This modifies RRS 35.

-The Race Committee will sound 3 blasts at 2135 hours to signal DNF for boats still on the course and announce on VHF Channel 68.

I will adjust the Scoresheet accordingly.

Includes a TLE for SPOOK who was 2nd Spin after Salute with an apparent radio failure but a qualified class?

Not able to get the posted results from the Spin qualified race.  We did not take down finish time as in midst of numerous sail changes.  Curious to finish and corrected time.

Michel

Yes the races for NS-C and NS-R should be cancelled as per the rules. We also discussed it on Amara as we went but figured, hey if the RC is having fun we keep going or at least try to.

Another rules no-no happened last night: RC decided to change Spin Boats course from C to D after the start by hailing on the radio. You can't do that. The only thing you can do is shorten the course. Or maybe call everybody back and launch them on the new course.

Race Committee Manual Section 9:

C. Courses may be shortened to any mark on the course that is common to the courses

being sailed by the Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker classes, and provided that the

Committee Boat is on station and prepared before the first boat arrives at the new finish line.

D. The Race Committee should try to notify all racers via VHF Channel 68 if the race is

postponed, canceled, abandoned, or course shortened.

Nowhere does it say that you can change a course like what happened yesterday, because you cannot. I was surprised to hear it, no spin boat objected and it was none of my business so I let it go. But it was clear that not all spin boats understood what was happening at the same time so I don't think it qualifies as fair and I am not sure that as a club we should register this result.

Matt Smith
A few of us read this section of the RC Manual several times to determine how long we had to be on station. We determined that it was 9:35pm. However we all missed the fact that the lead boat had to finish within 2hrs! Lesson learned. Just think though...if we would have done that, you all might have missed that big breath of wind that came at the end of the race! It was fun to watch the boats power up and cheer when crossing the line!

Mark,  So, what is the decision?  Race or no race for the spin class due course change?  We did the time qual but not the course qual.

I'm setting up a meeting of the Competition Committee to discuss the race/no race and a couple of other topics. Finally determination after that.

Mark, did you make the corrections to the S1R2 results that I sent you?

Also, can’t support your zoom meeting.  Still in Poland.  However, Cantata’s position on the spin class R2 is to let it stand as recorded.  My crew sailed a great race! They should be rewarded.  Stop being sea lawyers and get ready for Race 3.  Jason can explain what a sea lawyer is.

Cheers,
Hank

As the skipper with the most to gain by canceling the race I say let the race for the spinnaker class count and the results stand. Though, I have to say, every year we seem to have a situation where we ignore our rules. This can be very frustrating.

A couple of years ago we had a race where all the spinnaker boats finished. However, because of weather conditions the RC was not able to get on station. All the spinnaker boats but one recorded there time as stated in the rules. Yet we abandoned the race.

I try to keep in mind that we are an all-volunteer organization and we are all trying to do our best, and it’s Wednesday night racing. As a side note, I once had a crew member who raced in the Great Lakes area. They had a rule for Wednesday night racing that if you didn’t have a beer in your hand when you crossed the finish line you were disqualified. Now that is a rule I could get behind.

Cheers Kent

I think the current HHSA fleet is moving up a learning curve and you will have to decide how to handle these situations. Having been doing the Wednesday Beer Can races off Chicago on Lake Michigan for several years, I can tell you the races here are done pretty much by the book. We get 50-70 boats ranging from Cal 25s to TP52s divided into 6-7 classes. I wouldn’t say not having a beer in hand at the finish will get you disqualified but there certainly is plenty of beer on hand.

 Arne,

So good to hear from you! I gather that you and Debbie are still campaigning Mazal Tov ... good luck with that 😀.

It's nice to know that an old member who served in several Board positions, including RC Racing and Commodore, is keeping an eye on us.

All the best for the 2022 sailing season!

Best regards,
Keith

Eunice - Liberty Pre

I disagreed with Ted for purely selfish reasons. My crew was well aware of time limits and wondered why the race wasn't called per the rules. A lot of lessons to be learned here.
