I just saw the update. Thank you guys.

I think you need to pull the rabbit signup into a separate thread here in the Racing Discussion Forum.

Deck Boss

Jim and Mark,

I have fixed the link on the Racing Documents Page. It has the 2023 version now.

Jim

Hi Mark,

When I click on the link, it looks like it is the old 2020 SIs.  We still had some TBDs in our 2023 SIs, but those have been resolved.  Thanks to Jim Bradshaw for setting up our registration spreadsheet, referenced in the SIs.  Attached are the 2023 SIs.  I don’t seem to have permission to (or can’t figure it out how to) update the old document in the Racing Documents folder, or add a new doc.  Mark can you did this.

NOTE:  Please read the SIs (attached).  If you don’t see your boat in the registration spreadsheet, let me know.  Jim and I used the 20 most active boats.  You can be registered in both the SPIN and NON-SPIN sections, if you want to experiment.  Please sign up to be the rabbit start boat.

I have posted the Fall Practice Series SI's in the Racing Documents menu.

Deck Boss

Hi Mark

Thanks. I think the SIs are in the standard format. There is an appendix to describe the rabbit start.  Given the offer to leave the three HHSA yellow marks out, my opinion is that the rabbit start might be easier than dropping the inflatable - zero effort for RC requiring getting to the shed even earlier in the day. Worse case is some wind out of the West requires a start around HHSA-C.

The SIs are complete as draft. Jim is working on self-registration/self-scoring spreadsheet. I can update the SIs with that URL and process when available.

Regarding some of the questions:

Jayne or I can put the races on the HHSA calendar

For SI’s:

Use the format from the SI document. I can publish them to the website with the other documents.

We do have one or two inflatable yellow cylinders in the locker if needed.

Cheers

After this week's experience, I recommend taking pictures at the finish to help check finish times. While the pictures doesn't need to be sent exactly at the finish time, it should be sent ASAP. This really helps the scorer sort out any discrepancies.

Let me offer this possibility as an alternative to the rabbit start. HHSA purchases two 18" orange round fenders (https://www.westmarine.com/taylor-made-tuff-end-round-fenders-P005_156_001_007.html) $120 at W. Marine (maybe can find some used at Bacon's) and two 10 lb mushrooms (I have two used 1/2" x 45' genoa sheets which I'm happy to donate for rodes). That is essentially what CHESSS uses for their pin mark. That would give us two drop marks which are more easily carried onboard than the tetrahedron.

Whoever is the designated start boat would pick them up from the locker and drop both to create a starting line. That gives the opportunity for starting lines downwind of e.g. Green1 without having to go to another mark such as HHSA B (which may not be downwind).

Use the simplified starting sequence JIm proposes with the start boat blowing one horn at the five minute warning and at the start using gps time. Each boat takes own finish time. An early finisher retrieves the buoys and returns them to the locker.

Just a thought.

Ted

Hi all,

Thank you for all the interest in a WNR Series 4 and all of the supportive information. We definitely seem to have a quorum. Attached are draft SI's for your review and comment. These are based on the 2020 SI's with the following modifications:

* Clarified that other boats are allowed to tack once the rabbit has an opportunity to tack, not once the rabbit has actually tacked.

* Clarified the rabbit start procedure for those that might not be familiar with it.

* Updated for the race dates, commencing Wed 13 Sep (after Herring Bay Cup) through Wed 11 Oct. So 5 races. QUESTION - how are events created on the HHSA calendar?

* Jim Bradshaw has volunteered to be scorekeeper -- Thank you, Jim. There are some TBDs in the SI's as placeholder for a spreadsheet/procedure he will create for start and finish times to be reported.

* Emphasized this is not a series, but a collection of individual practice races. So no points or awards, and boats can change between spin and non-spin each race, if desired.

* Continued encouragement of using RaceQs...which will be even more useful and educational in this format of experimentation, learning, and having fun.

Not wanting to usurp any official procedure or authority, so how do this draft SI get converted into official SI?

Thanks Kevin - this is a huge help.

2020 thread on races:

https://www.hhsa.org/content.aspx?page_id=2155&club_id=8237&item_id=1053300

I would modify Appendix: Rabbit start:

"After starting, all boats shall remain on starboard tack until the Rabbit <strike>has tacked<insert>is eligible to tack <original> to starboard."

For reference:

The Rabbit may tack to starboard at any time after all boats have crossed her stern, or after the Rabbit has crossed the bows of all boats, or any time later than 90 seconds after passing the starting mark (#5).

Two years ago we had an issue with first leg that was basically a port fetch. As written the fleet would be stuck on starboard until the Rabbit rounded the mark, which clearly isn't the intent. If it's clear the race has started and the rabbit is passed all boats starting in a timely manner, you can tack.

Thank you for all the support and suggestions. I think we have reached a viable fleet of interested racers. Mark - what are the appropriate next steps to make it organized unofficial - I can write up some draft SIs about time, rabbit start, not part of high point, etc, etc, then is there something needs to happen at the HHSA committee level to approve/revise the SI? Anything else?

Kaya and crew would be in for an informal Series 4 WNR. I second Kevin's comment about not taking it too seriously and I like the bar rule -- but I don't think the rule needs to be written (which seems to violate the premise about not taking it too seriously). I also agree that when we informally extended the season last time with the rabbit starts it seemed to work well. We did participate in a race that required all protests to written in crayon and notarized on a cocktail napkin at the bar immediately after the race, to be disposed of in any manner deemed suitable by the race committee. Might work for this one!

We enjoyed the rabbit start 4th series in 2020. Someone proposes a course on 68, a brief discussion to confirm, then away we go. Bay Retriever will be there.

I propose a rule that if you take the races too seriously as voted on by the other boats you owe everyone a round at the bar afterwards. We've broken enough gear this year and I really don't want to spend any more time in the yard.

FYI,

This was done in  2020.  We used rabbit starts.  It worked quite well.

Thanks Doug for the interest, support, and suggestions. Looks like we are converging on some good ideas and a critical mass of boats.

Jim & Jim.

An earlier start say 6:15pm and I might get some crew for learning.

I would suggest a start from A and an orange mark.

Then someone can count down. Honor system if OCS.

If you commit a foul do 3 turns!!!!

Each boat gets time of boat behind them unless a group of 2 or more boats are very close coming into finish. Use gps time of day. First boats gets there time while passing a boat length to either mark.

At Pirates Cove the start and finish line are the same always and you just deal with the wind direction.

2 cents worth,

Doug

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your interest, support and suggestions. We can definitely do a later start time (6pm) with limited courses. Was also noodling way to have the RC also race - RC picks course, drops tetrahedron perpendicular to the wind near HHSA-A, radios start sequence, but is in the race. Perhaps have everyone use RaceQs - any over the line early issues, and finish times are automated. Anything to make it more accessible to those that want to participate.

Hope to hear from more interested racers.

Take care
