Sharing at the request of family:
Dear Family and Friends,
We have lost our Bob, who died in peace, with grace and dignity, at home on September 12. He was under the kind and compassionate care of hospice. His last food was mint chocolate chip gelato; his last musical listening was to pieces by Beethoven.
I write “we” and “our,” for all of us shared in his plentiful life on earth of 76 years. We enjoyed his ready sense of humor, his clear thinking, his penetrating intellect, his far ranging interests, the way he put us at ease as a companion, and his courage in the face of challenges. Blessings went both directions. In turn, his life was enriched by your loyal and steadfast friendships, sparkling conversations, visits to DC, digital communications, hospitality in your homes, and genuine admiration.
His funeral will be at 10:00 on Wednesday, September 20 at St. Ann Catholic Church, the City of Washington. It is at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Nebraska Avenue, NW. For GPS services, please enter “St. Ann Catholic Church” and the zip code “20016”. The church website is stanndc.org.
The front door has lots of steps so most people use the side entrance to the church on 4001 Yuma Street, off of Wisconsin Avenue. Curbside parking is available on nearby streets. If you are coming from out-of-state you can ignore the “Zone 3 holders only” message on the green and white signs which indicate parking. Oddly, DC does not enforce payment of tickets on out-of- state cars. The nearest Metro station is the Tenleytown-American University stop on the Red Line. When you exit the station, walk less than 10 minutes south on Wisconsin Avenue.
I have attached a copy of Bob’s Obituary. I have also attached a photo of three folded photos. Just before the funeral home came to transport Bob’s body to be cremated, I put the three photos in his pocket. One is of him racing his sailboat Resilient, another is of both of us, and the third is a happy photo of him on a sailboat. As I put the photos in his pocket, I thought of his dedication to sailing and said, “Yes, with God’s mercy you have come into your final port on a beam reach.”
Warmly,
Beth
