AYC Solomons Race Womans Crew

You are receiving this email because way back in February, you expressed interest in racing in the HHSA Womens Regatta.  Covid Crushed those plans with many others.  Since I last emailed you alot has changed in my life as well.  I also have gone full time into racing sailboats professionally and a few other maritime-type-activities.  I am certified as a US Sailing Coach, by Safe Sport and have also been racing with a Volvo Ocean Race team on a Volvo 65.  It was a great spring right up until the Virus.

My partner (Huda) and I would like to invite 5 other ladies (possibly 6) to join us.

We would practice as soon as we can but for sure on the 25th of September as we sail from Herrington Harbor South to Annapolis.  Once we get to Annapolis we will overnight on the boat wake up early and get to the start line on the race 26th to Solomon Island.  We will spend the night at a marina and cruise back to HHS on Sunday the 27th.

What is in it for you?

My plan is to treat this as a training session for offshore sailing, have a few Zoom sessions with the team to discuss how to prep for offshore racing.

During the race I will take a position "after-guard" and do not plan on doing anything unless there is a safety issue.  I will make recommendations during the race but all of the decisions will be made by the team. If needed, I will drive for the start of the race.  We will race as a true cruiser in the ORR ez class.

Velocity is a Catalina 445 and she is really performing well with her brand new sails. The earlier we can get 4 or 5 committed, the better the chances we will have to win.  With one small tactical mistake last year, we took second.  I think with new sails, we can do well.

Learning objectives:
  1) Understand the aspects of prepping a boat and team for an offshore sail race.
  2) Understand the dynamics of building a team and managing expectations of each individual that makes up the team.
  3) Demonstrate the phases of tacking and jibing
  4) Demonstrate how to set, deploy and douse an asymmetrical spinnaker from a sock
  5) Demonstrate how to set, roll out/in an asymmetrical spinnaker from a roller furling.
  6) Demonstrate inside and outside jibes.
  7) and more

Please be prepared to share costs (slip fees, bottom cleaning, training costs and provisions not to exceed 250 dollars).

As always - expect something like this if you would like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_28YXlSbpM&t=13s
