R/C Racing Candidate Discussions

The Competition Committee plays an important role, in support of the RC Racing.  The members of the CC should be known to the racing membership and be available on either a formal or informal basis to channel communication back and forth.  I do not presently know all 12 members of the CC, or in what capacity they have assisted in running the Racing program in recent years. Hopefully they have helped Michel out and made his life easier.

I created the Competition Committee entity some years ago through an Amendment to the By-Laws.  Until that happened it was called the Race Committee, with no real way to distinguish it from the race management folks that performed the-on-water duties.  It was at a time of change in the racing landscape - from a Rules perspective and a participation perspective, and as it turned out, for the Club. HHSA was isolated and a little stuck in the past.  We were using an antiquated starting sequence, there was little discipline and consistency in Race Management, and we had our own set of Racing Rules that in many situations were in conflict with RRS.  Kent Kunze and some of his contemporaries created the first Sailing Instructions because until then there was not a separate document for those.

I have a management style and philosophy that I have employed both professionally and recreationally - Surround yourself with good people.

With a select small group I set about transforming the Club's Racing Program.  Folks like Ted Slotwinski, Bruce Artman, Rich Griner, Hank Chalkley, and others.  We created the Course Book, completely revised the Racing Rules and Race Management Documents, and tightened up the Sailing Instructions.  Ted created the Race Management Seminar and between us we refined it and delivered it at the beginning of each season.  The result was a huge improvement in running the on-the-water activities.  Of course, we also purchased the HHSA Marks. I organized HHSA's first Frostbite Races and drew up the courses that we use today.  Emily and I organized the first Womens Regatta.

I bring these points up because I am passionate about sailing in general, but especially fond of HHSA and what it offers to the sailing community in this part of the Bay.  The energy and creativity of some of our newer members has resulted in another evolution for the Club - embracing social media to expand our reach and footprint, coming up with new ideas to keep us interested and interesting.  We are in the spotlight outside Herring Bay and it is all good.

Back to the question from Michel.  I believe that for some years now we have been in maintenance mode as it related to managing the Club's Racing Program.  What we are doing is working well.  But we need to have an open mind and be ready to respond to new ideas (such as including catamarans).  Bringing those ideas to the table and turning them something actionable is an important responsibility of the CC, assisting the RC Racing to make the right moves.

At the heart of our racing program is the Race Management - the on-the-water activities such as setting up the starting line, picking the courses, getting multiple classes started safely and on time, setting up the finish line, recording finish times, and sending them to the Scorer.  The Race Committee needs to set a fair playing field (square lines etc.) be reliable and predictable, and communicate their intentions clearly.  Racers should not have guess what the RC is doing.  The RC Racing and the Competition Committee should lead by example and be prepared to offer advice and feedback when things don't go well.  Little things become important - using the correct flags, hanging the course boards on the correct side of the committee boat, communicating effectively with the racers.  These are areas of focus for me.  When we get it right everyone benefits.  When we get it wrong someone ends up being unhappy and perhaps unfairly treated ... let's try to minimize those!

Thanks,
Keith

My question for both candidates:

How do they see the role of the Competition Committee?

Thanks

Chris,

I understand where you are coming from.  The answer is not a simple one, but here are some thoughts.

Whatever accommodation we come up with for handling a catamaran start, we have to make sure that it does not adversely impact the rest of the members sailing monohulls.  Sometimes the RC has to quickly gather up ground tackle and tetrahedron after the last sequence and hustle into position for a finish at HHSA A or, from time to time, another mark for a shortened course. A 4th start sequence is not a deal breaker unless there are delays or General Recalls.  Something to keep in mind.

It seems that a "Build it and they will (hopefully) come" approach might be the way to go.  To accomplish this with as little impact to the RC and the other boats as possible, it might make sense for you to position one of our other inflatable marks 1/2 mile or less (weather dependent) upwind of the start (or downwind for a downwind start).  That way you use the regular starting line and sail a suitably short first leg.  You may even decide to sail a different course from the monohulls, but you would always use the same finish mark.

Start with one or two boats, work out the details, get it working properly for you and the Club, and then go sell the idea to others.

As RC Racing I would assist with the planning and execution of a plan that feels right for you and encourages another group of sailors to get out on the water more often.  Don't die wondering!

Thanks,
Keith

My question to both candidates; If we are able to get 3 catamarans registered for racing would you be open to creating different courses with the same start / finish but a course that is less to windward.  I love racing, but found it frustrating that our cat just doesn't point well and took forever to get around the first buoy.  Perhaps going around virtual buoy's on the chart plotter?   I don't think congestion was a problem this past year, but a separate course could remove us further from the other boats (except at the finish line perhaps).   Would love to hear your thoughts on this and your willingness to pursue it.

Hi Chris:

Cruising Catamaran racing is challenging for the racers as well as the RC running the race. We are fortunate that we have our coursebook that addresses most wind speed and directions that we encounter on Herring Bay. My understanding is that it follows the basic approach that US Sailing uses in designing race courses (windward/leeward and triangle courses). This approach tests sailing skills versus drag racing. The catamarans on the Potomac race the same courses as the scows, lasers, albacores, etc.

I've sailed on several boats that had a hard time going to windward. It can be because of hull shape, baggy sails, new crew, lots of things. My first race on Julep (my old Beneteau 36.7) started with light wind and it took me and my son 30 minutes to cross the start line. After a few seasons, we got better at boat handling, understanding what the boat did well, and prepping the boat to race. It was a real accomplishment when we felt we were competitive in every race.

The Cruising Cats are definitely different from Hobies. You're driving a duplex around while the monohulls are apartments

and condos sometimes lawn chairs. On Hello Catty, I was happy to get 1 more knot out of her when everyone was saying that we couldn't tack without the motor 😮 I don't know if you've have done this, but many of our racers have had coaches on board to help improve their boats and crews, particularly new boats. I wouldn't call myself a sailing coach, but I would love to go out on 3 Seas to see how she performs. She was great for hauling out the racing marks!😎 It might be a placed to start.

Cheers,

Mark

Good question, Michel. I'm going to repost it in the General Discussion forum.

The purpose of the Competition Committee is to provide support to the racing program. Support should include action as well as expertise. Our racing program requires a good bit of care and feeding:

  • annually review and update the course book, rules, and SI's;
  • maintenance, deploying/recovering of the race marks;
  • collecting, ranking, and publishing race results;
  • assembling and presenting awards;
  • conducting training for committee boat skippers and crew;
  • assisting our racer in improving their skills;

Along with those tasks, we run the Women's Regatta.

Each of these tasks should have at least one committee member coordinating as well as recruiting people to do the heavy lifting (i.e. those marks aren't getting lighter 😄). I see this group of people as the Competition Committee. Recruiting is usually the hard part so the Competition Committee needs to be there to support each other when called. Each of these people is a possible future R/C Racing.

Cheers,

Mark

By the way, sorry this wasn't clear, but the candidates should also answer the questions here as well.
